Porters Ski Field, Craigieburn Range

I had my first ski of the season (and since it’s officially spring, I’m certain it will also be my last ski of the season) – the second since being in New Zealand. The snow was, as would be expected at this time of year after an extremely mild winter, on its last legs – but the weather was absolutely glorious.

Even if the skiing didn’t turn out to be fun (which it totally was), the incredible views at the top of the mountain would have made the whole day worth it.

(I’m glad I’m not the only one that halts to peer down over a somewhat ominous slope).

There was enough snow (though a strange mix of ice and slush) on most of the runs, but not much anywhere else!

Overall nothing too steep, but lots of narrow paths with sheer drops should you misjudge your turns!

(I don’t actually think they expect the fences to save anyone from going over).

I should also mention, that though I have failed to include a picture, I had my first T-bar experience – and only fell off the first time!

It’s hard to compare Porters to Mount Hutt (where I went last year) because of the huge weather discrepancy. Last year was frigid, windy, and downright unpleasant, almost completely obscuring the scenery. However, as an intermediate/advanced skier with a craving for stunning views, I doubt this could be beat. Hopefully I’ll get to try a third (and maybe fourth?) place next winter!
