Avalanche Peak, Arthur’s Pass

A fun and very popular day walk starting right out the back door of the Arthur’s Pass info center is the “6-8hr round trip” Avalanche Peak (1833m).  With a steep gradient both ways (Avalanche Peak Route up and Scott’s Route down), if you keep a steady pace it can be done in less than 5 hours including lunch at the top (just barely long enough to justify the 2hr drive out).  Couldn’t have asked for better weather, and clearly plenty of people were trying to take advantage of potentially one of the last warm and clear days as we head deeper into the infamously mercurial Canterbury Autumn (I tried to dodge everyone when taking photos, but it was PACKED at the top).  DSC_0027
